Living Person or Living Weapon?
X-23/Laura Kinney
Thread is set several days after the Battle of the Institute…

Chicago had been hard for the being known as X-23, hard but enlightening. It had been, in a very real way, a turning point for Laura as she had been forced to come face to face with her past, with her family and with the Weapon X project. Who she was when she had left New York was not who she was now, at least not where it counted. Reuniting with her aunt Deborah and her Cousin Megan had awakened something in her that had not been present since the death of her mother. She had found peace in knowing her family was safe and a desire to make sure no one could ever hurt them again. She had also come to terms with the fact that she was far more than just a construct made from the genetic material of another being, that she had a soul, she was a real person. These realizations had also awakened in her the desire to know more about herself, to discover the meaning behind her existence and maybe forge a future from whatever she did discover.

The first place to look Laura realized would be the man who was ultimately the base of her very being, Logan, more notoriously known as the Wolverine…

Tracking the Wolverine would have been hard enough under normal circumstances for he had decades worth of knowledge and experience in not only battle but in covering his tracks. She was intimately familiar with his profile and exploits thanks to the program for she had been designed to be his replacement yes but they were well aware of the fact that at some point she might come into contact with him and have to deal with her progenitor once and for all. Unfortunately, not only for her but perhaps for all of their kind, the events that had transpired while she and Jamie Madrox aka the Multiple Man had been in Chicago trying to find and rescue her family may have forever changed the landscape of what it would mean to be mutant. Together they had been far too busy with her personal mission to keep up to date of current events but the day they were to return to New York the news was awash with reports of a battle between military personnel and various noted meta-mutant groups including the X-Men and the Avengers on the grounds of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Side by side Laura and Jamie had watched in silent shock as images of a near totally destroyed mansion and grounds were shown on television. They both had a connection to the Institute, Jamie had practically been raised there at least in part and Laura had been brought there by Spider-Man while living on the streets not too long ago. Of course the place had very little meaning to her over all but she had come to know many of the students and faculty in her brief stay, she had come to understand the importance of the school and the dream the X-Men were working towards and she knew that the destruction of the school by sanctioned military forces would have a huge impact on the world of super-humans.

Upon returning to New York Jamie had offered her a place to stay within the apartment that made up his investigation headquarters. She had accepted seeing no point now in returning back to the streets but she also made it clear she had things she needed to deal with before she could rest. Leaving her few belongings with him she immediately set out on her own to investigate what she could of the incident at the school and perhaps with luck pick up a trail that would lead to Logan.

It took her practically no time and very little effort to slip into the grounds of the Xavier Institute where surprisingly a reconstruction effort was already underway. Keeping abreast of the news now as it concerned the incident she was aware that the government had taken a major back step in the SRA movement and with the bad pressed garnered by such a drastically violent step taking against a school they had offered to rebuild the grounds and institute and reinstate its operations under government oversight. Laura had found that amusing in its absurdity. The government who had already proven to be utterly corrupt when it came to the treatment of meta’s and mutants would no doubt use the school as a culling field, an easy area in which they could control and watch for mutants and metas that would suit their future purposes. The very idea of the school reopening under such oversight was laughable and if the staff of the school actually fell for the offer then they didn’t deserve the job of overseeing the young and impressionable lives that would be in the balance.

Laura moved through the shadows of the destroyed grounds, slipping between rubble and construction equipment with a perfect ease and silence bred into her as a living weapon. Most of the machines were shut off and construction crews were gone for the day but security around the grounds and a few overnight workers were still roaming about making this a stealth oriented mission. Knowing that dropping bodies would be yet another blow to mutant/meta reputations she made the decision even before slipping into the grounds to use only non-lethal tactics if she were at all compromised. Sneaking in had been all too simple enough by coming in through a quartered off back wall that had been blown out then tracking her way across the rubble strewn lawns to make her way to what remained of the main building. Using her claws to scale a partially ruined wall along the west side of the institute then moving from room to room her main goal was at this moment trying to pick up various scents and assess the damage done.

A lot could be garnered just by looking and taking in the destruction around her and much like a crime scene there were clues everywhere as to how the battle went down. The attack as far as she could tell had been sudden, the military arriving out of the blue but likely giving the school a chance to surrender itself to them and submit to registration. The people inside had enough time to evacuate a number of the students as defined by how many of the living quarters showed signs of abrupt but not forced departures. There were no clear signs of violence or death in these rooms but she could smell blood in the air, old and dried but very much there even if it might have been visibly cleaned up. Moving down into the main hall which had been the first thing visitors would see when entering the building she could see signs of a great battle, walls crumbling, the roof practically gone and nothing left of the pretty old fashioned furniture. The battle had been fought mostly outside on the grounds but it had started with an assault. Here, because of the light pouring down from the moon above and a pair of guards moving about with high powered flash lights Laura moved quietly from shadow to shadow, inching close to the pair that impeded her. The two were talking to one another intermingled with sporadic confirmations of the area being clear over their walkie-talkies to the main security building near the now leveled gates. This was a clear indication to X-23 that if she took them out her time on the grounds would be cut much shorter when their transmissions ceased. Skirting around the mostly sunken part of the upper level that looked down into the foiya she crouched low to watch the pair, listen to their conversation.

“Muties put up a good fight… Too bad they mostly got away.”

“Don’t call’em that their people just like anyone else…”

“Aww man why did they have to stick me with the bleeding heart liberal rookie. Look man those people are dangerous and their living among us in secret. You need to get your head outta your ass and see the world for what it is kid.”

“Look my cousin is a mutant and she is harmless, she can make plants grow and she works in a flower nursery. She supplies the best wedding arrangements in Las Vegas.”

“Yeah? And what happens when she decides to make plants that can eat people? How about flowers that put people to sleep? Shit man it’s like ya never seen a movie or a comic. These things’re real now.”

Laura sighed softly watching the two argue and seeing that no matter the situation very little ever really changed. There were those that would defend the different, the anomalous and those that would forever shun and fear them just because they were not part of their definition of normal. She had to move this much she knew, she could not sit up in this shadowed little croft forever waiting and hoping for the two to move on. For all she knew they may have had orders to remain in this area for the full night but there was more of the grounds she needed to survey before moving on. Leaping down as quietly as possible she skirted around the edge of the room until she had fully circled to their backs.

“I say kill all the freaks and let god sort them out…”

She resisted the urge to growl, to pop her claws and gut the clearly racist security guard. Instead she let the two alone and allowed their argument to continue. People like him would get their come-upons one day she knew that much for though she was a product of science she had come to clearly believe surprisingly enough that fate and karma were real enough. The thought that she was indeed growing, coming to believe in things beyond just her physical reality was a bit of a surprise to her as she realized it, clearly she was evolving and that was yet another sign that what she had learned on her most recent adventure was true, she was becoming a real person.

Slipping back outside she moved with quick, silent sprints across the front lawn, moving from one area to another to investigate the clearly pock marked battlefield. She kept her senses alert, watching, listening and smelling for any sign of more security personnel and avoiding the occasional light from construction towers that moved with mechanical precision across the grounds. She needed to know what happened here, she needed to be sure that the people she cared for were not… that Kurt and Abbey were… She breathed deep trying to supress the emotions boiling inside. Now was not the time to let what she was starting to feel get the better of her. Though as young as she and not nearly as seasoned or trained Kurt and Abbey were none the less X-Men in their own right or would be and she had faith that they were ok. It was however ducking into a crater the size of a small car that she found something that would help her… something that would move her forward in her quest… in the dust at her feet, torn and burnt, the mask of the Wolverine lay where it had fallen during the battle. Kneeling down she dusted it off as gently as an archeologist might some sacred ancient relic and picked it with a tender, slow gesture to hold it before her face. Laura stared into the empty eye sockets of the mask, examining it carefully and breathing deep the scent that remained on it. For the first time she could smell her progenitor, could mark his scent and all of its complexities. With this as a key she could now perhaps open the door on herself for the first time in her short and bitter existence.

I am the best there is at what I do
It had been a few months since the attack and the X-Men had effectively ceased to exist after the school had fallen to Government Forces all of them had followed the protocols laid down by Charles and Scott. The safe houses had been set up with supplies and protected by blending into the background so that the kids could have a place to regroup and the staff could assess the situation and start taking on information so that they could get the kids into a place of relative safety. That part had gone off without a hitch and he was still considering his options when it came to the kids, Scott had disappeared off the grid so Lord only knew where he was. Jean knew but he wasn't going to press her for details, the last thing that he wanted to do was to encourage her to go back to Scott, he was the worst thing for her in his opinion but then he was biased. Logan knew that he loved her, more than anything or anyone he had ever encountered during his long life which was saying something. Of course, over the years he had lovers and women that had a special place in his heart and always would but over the years that he had seen Jean grow into the person that she was, he found him falling in love with her. It had happened slowly and over time certainly not when she had been a kid that he was training, but her compassion and empathy won him over and he knew that once his heart crossed that line he had no choice but to see it through.

Sadly, Jean had chosen Scott and he had to respect that decision. If he actually loved her rather than the more selfish version then he had to be happy for her and the fact that she found someone that made her equally as happy but that didn't mean he had to support it and he made sure that he kept a distance from that. If she had problems with him he didn't always trust himself to give sage advice because more than anything, he believed that Scott was actually toxic for that beautiful young woman but then he mused that he would see anyone with her that wasn't him as toxic. That had been in the past, the two of them had split because of the SRA and so at least something positive had come out that and now he was working with Steve Rogers to fight a law that he saw as evil and potentially the thing that would lead them all into bondage. Now his work had taken him across the country which wasn't something that he had hoped for but it was required, his job was to watch over Rogers as his Security Chief which Rogers had asked him to do himself. It was because Logan could do the things and think of the things that he couldn't and he would put his safety ahead of the cause which was his opinion, Rogers wanted him to look to the cause first but that wasn't possible because this thing didn't work without Rogers. He was a nexus, where he went the Universe tended to go because he drew it with him by the force of his personality and the fact that people trusted him not because of anything he said but because of the content of his character and the way that he put others before himself. Those were just some of the qualities that made him determined to keep his ass safe even if it meant protecting himself from himself.

Logan was doing a security sweep of the area, with the Sentinels and other groups all searching for them, it meant that he had to make sure he wasn't being observed by Satellites or Drones which had been deployed. So Logan was keeping to the shadows and ensuring that he kept within the darkness of the buildings which gave him cover, they had set up remote cameras that transmitted low-level video feeds to nexus points and those went through secondary hard lines that would then upload to a remote transmitter that then washed those signals to make sure that no one could trace the data back to them. Footage of the area was essential, observation was a key point to ensuring security and he was determined that he and the rest of them would not be caught off guard and if they were going to be attacked he was going to make sure that they had all the warning that they needed. That meant that he had remain mobile which wasn't a problem for him and from the look of the footage he was looking over, there were units passing over the area but nothing concentrated which was a key factor. If they were going to charge in after them they were going to gather their strength because they would need it if they were going to come in after them which would give them warning and they had protocols in place in case that happened. Rogers didn't want to confront them so the strategy was to fall back with a minimum of resistance and then regroup. It wasn't something he agreed with but it was Rogers call, Logan continued to upload data to his personal device on the roof while airplanes passed over head and he continued to take in the scents of the area just out of habit.

Living Person or Living Weapon?
X-23/Laura Kinney
It took some time… the city of New York was expansive over its coastal and island areas and with its population of approximately 8 million there were so many sights, smells and other factors which could muddle a trackers senses that picking out one singular scent was nearly impossible…

At least nearly impossible for most…

Laura had left the Xavier Institute ruins and moved through the city, over rooftops, across streets and through allies with the scent of her genetic template, the mutant known as Wolverine, now indelibly memorized. The mask he had worn was now in her possession, recovered from the government controlled ruins and their reconstruction efforts, a clear sign to her that Logan had been at the battle and undoubtedly come out alive. She was now bound and determined to have her first face to face with the legendary Weapon X. He was in this city that much she was sure of, his unique spoor was in the air mingled with a billion other scents that her enhanced olfactory senses could pick up and he was likely in hiding after what had occurred at the Institute, an event she herself had been absent while looking for her kidnapped family in Chicago. Before that battle had taken place though she had spent some time at the Institute, brought there off the streets by the vigilante hero known as Spider-Man, she had hoped that if she stuck around there long enough she would eventually come into contact with the man who was in essence everything she was built from. To her knowledge Logan had left the Institute quite some time before that due to a split between the X-Men over the Super-Human Registration Act. Siding with the Anti-Registration movement led by Captain America he had become persona-non-grata at the Institute. Despite this Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, had allowed her to stay there even after she had explained who and what she was to him. He had indeed promised to help her communicate with the Wolverine when all of the SRA nonsense could be worked out. Though she was made aware of the two men’s dislike for one another she had accepted his charity and his promise to at least let her confront the man even if it might come down to such a meeting being made with incarceration bars between them.

That however had never come to pass…

Now conversely Laura was done waiting. With everything that had befallen the students and staff of the Institute and the debate over the SRA increasing the clone of Wolverine felt it was time to make her presence known to him, to confront her progenitor and maybe come to some understanding of truly who and what she was. This trek through the city, as long and twisted as it was to keep on the scent, eventually brought her into the Brooklyn borough. The most populated of the New York City boroughs this area was commonly residential with a smattering of business and high industrial along the coast thus making mobility a slightly trickier task for Laura, restricting her movements to side streets and alleys to stay out of sight. Like a shadow in the night she literally slipped across the area with the speed and grace of a perfectly trained assassin, following the scent of her target in the air as it grew stronger the closer she approached. This for Laura Kinney thrilled her on more than one level, the hunt itself was a natural pleasure in and of itself but the knowledge that she would be confronting her genetic template made this all the more exciting and even a bit scary. In her years under the Weapon X program she had been trained to be the ultimate assassin, warrior, spy etc. for their operations, a bred killer with no conscience and no other will but to serve them in any operation they deemed fit. This training had also obviously included detail data on the original Weapon X in case it was ever decided to send her after the Wolverine or if by chance they ever came into contact during a mission. Now though, free of the program, she had all of this information and only one motivation to use it…

“James Howlett?” She spoke from the shadows cast by shrouded moonlight and the lights of the nearby Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the structure that connected the boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island. “Special Forces number 45825243-T78-A… Canadian Citizen by Origin, Joined Canadian Armed Forces Approximately 1914…” Slowly Laura stepped out from the ally she had finally come down in her search, approached the figure of Logan laying eyes on him in person for the first time in her life all she could honestly think of nothing else to say but her natural and somewhat trained reaction to filter through the information she had on his background. “Acquired Citizenship in the nation of Mandripoor in 1932 through unknown but suspected illegal means. Reinstated into Canadian Military Forces in 1939 and fought in multiple engagements against Nazi and Hydra forces overseas. Joined the US Military Special task force Team X in 1961 gaining US Citizenship in the process.” Once she was within a few feet of the man who was her… literally her but for a difference in the sexual chromosomes… she stopped and stared at him for a moment, looking him over in an inspecting manner, the same way she would a target. She scanned him from head to two, taking in his dark hair so like her own, his shorter than standard male height, his sharp eyes, the way he breathed, the way his muscles moved as he turned to look at her. He was everything the files she had been forced to memorize said he was… She could see it even in the poor light, in his confusion as to who she was and the tensing of his muscles ready for a fight, a warrior, a soldier, a weapon, a man with a long history and a dark past. “…1972… entered into the Weapon X project… becoming the first…” Her voice was low, catching in her throat as she thought of everything that had happened to him… that had happened to her… how the Weapon X Project had practically become the crux on which their lives were built. They both had endured pains that no one but they could ever understand. Yet at the same time as similar as they were Laura could see now that she and the man known now as Logan were also two very different beings. He had lived for decades and had so much experience out in the world before and after what the project had done to him. He had pulled his life back together and become more, had become a hero. She had let the life she had been born to only drag her down, fearing that what she was or indeed what she wasn’t, a real person, would only hurt those around her. She had caused the death of her mother, she had caused her other family members to be targets for the project. She had feared that in reality she was as artificial as a store manikin and all she was ever good for was hurting and killing people.“…the first successful subject to undergo the Adamantium bonding process and subsequent emotional and memory manipulation process… the first successful living weapon…” The words finally came out and with them her hands balled into fists… SNIKT, SNIKT… the dual adamantium coated bone claws popped free glinting in the dull light as she stared at The Wolverine and waited for him to speak.

I am the best there is at what I do
The communications hubs had been Rogers idea and he had to admit they were a good one, it was something that he had picked up in France from the Resistance, they would use crude radio transmitters to bounce signals around so that if the Gestapo tracked down their transmission they would find it at one of the relay stations rather than their actual transmission point. Once they had the plan in place, he had taken on the job of getting them set up and when they needed to be checked over heading out to do that too mostly because with his heightened senses it would be incredibly hard to sneak up on him and because if there were trouble he would be able to get out far more quickly than Steve could. It irked him that they were forced to use such measures to secure their communications but it made sense when he thought about it, Stark was one of the best when it came to technology and he had practically invented the telecommunication systems that the modern world relied on. If there was anyone who would be able to crack traditional communication networks it would be him but an old school system like this that was based on analogue technology would prove immune to most modern measures that could be used to penetrate their communications. Without secure comms they were at risk of being led into a trap or being unable to call for back up if one of them got into trouble or a host of other issues that stemmed from not being able to trust the communications systems which was why they had gone ahead with all of the work needed to get it going.

Thankfully over the years he had picked up a trick or two when it came to these sort of systems, it was part and parcel of the work that he had been involved with and while he wasn't anywhere near as proficient as Hank or Forge, he was well versed enough to keep these systems going. Checking out the unit here, there had been a power surge during that last storm and a couple of the components had been burned out so he reached into one of his belt pouches for the spare parts that he had brought with him. Switching them out would take a couple of minutes and he used a small Phillips head screwdriver and as long as he was careful to remove the components from the transmitter unit and then cleaning off where there had been some charring from the power surge before he installed the new chips. They were heading into a new phase for the movement, Rogers was certain that they were seeing the cracks starting to form now that they had made a critical error when they assaulted the school. That event had drawn them all together and for the first time in a long time, the AVENGERS, X-Men and SHIELD had all fought together on the same side. It was about time too in his opinion as when they were united there wasn't anything that they couldn't achieve at least in his opinion.

His mind was focused on the task but he picked up the scent of someone coming up behind him, how they had managed to get this close he wasn't sure but if they were here he doubted they were here to talk. Almost instantly his body started to prepare itself for battle as adrenaline surged through him, she was talking about him as if she had read part of his Weapon X file and as he turned around his claws long ago bonded with the mythic metal known as Adamantium snapped out of his fore arms and sunlight reflected off the metallic surface as Wolverine snarled in defensive rage. "Don't know who you are girl but if you are here looking for trouble, you better believe that you've found it." He was a little surprised to see her with claws that looked like Adamantium, he knew that Creed had claws and if this lass had them it meant that she had been experimented on like he had. There was only one way to get Adamantium bound to your skeleton and that was through the Weapon X process and if she had claws that meant she was a bargain basement rip off of him and he was primed for battle if she wanted to get into this. There was a part of him that thought about retreating and getting support from one of the others but his pride got in the way, he wasn't concerned and if things went down from here he was always confident that he would come out on top as he growled and his body became primed for battle. It did show one thing though, if she was with the other side, then that meant that Weapon X was starting to send agents out after them which meant that Rogers and the others were all going to be targets so he would have to deal with this quickly if he was going to get the warning out before it was too late.

Living Person or Living Weapon?
X-23/Laura Kinney
The sound of his breath, the tone of his voice, the scent of his body readying itself for a fight, all of it was almost intoxicating for Laura as she stopped in place and stared at her genetic progenitor for the first time. She could see every muscle in his body reflexively going tight and then loosening again in the same way hers did when she was entering into a state of aggressive preparedness. The scent of his adrenaline pumping filled the air despite their the open area in which they both stood, the shine of the Wolverine’s claws in the light glinting with steely coldness like her own, all of this and more instinctively brought a rush to X-23, an excitement that only feral predators like themselves could ever understand.

Yet even as she stood, openly examining the man standing directly in front of her Laura’s mind drifted partially to the past… To the Program… to her life as the weapon he was supposed to be…

“Why?” She questioned aloud though conscious of the fact he would not understand. She thought of the all the pain and hardship she had endured since infancy, the torture and the trials designed to mold her into an emotionless yet tactical killing machine. “WHY!?” She practically growled realizing that her entire existence was ultimately because he had been so sought after, because he had become so uncontrollable and escaped from the program’s grasp leaving them his legacy and his genetic material in the process. She could not fully or rationally blame him for escaping Weapon X but at the moment for Laura little seemed to feel rational. He was at the center of her existence… he was her… she was him… A carbon copy with only a slight twist in her genes to make her female rather than male.

With a roar of anger like a wolf ready to strike she started to sprint towards him, arms out to her sides with claws diagonal to her body, a charge of feral rage yet calculated at the same time showing that she was no mere mindless brute but trained. Instead of doing what might have been obvious, moving in for a slash or stab to his body, Laura instead fell to her knees as she came within 2 feet of Logan, sliding across the ground for an attempted slash at his legs. She wasn’t confident it would work, the knowledge she did have on Logan consisting of extensive combat training of his own not to mention decades worth of experience but it was a move that would get her in close where her own training, skills and speed would serve her best.

I am the best there is at what I do
There was so much information to take in that Logan had to brace himself as his mind and senses processed all of it, the scent she carried and the way she stood as well as the fact that she had adamantium claws all meant that in some way she was related to him. There weren't that many mutants who would be able to withstand the Adamantium bonding process, it wasn't just about the healing factor which most people thought, it was more about the force of will to endure, that driving need to survive. Logan knew that he had it and so did the people that experimented on him and that was the reason that he was to date their only success story or at least so he thought, it was that combination of willpower and a need to survive that outmatched anyone else he had ever met. She was muttering things to herself which didn't make sense but then when it had been him on the other side of this, the things that he had done made her seem tame at least for now. It was obvious that there were a couple of things going on here, either she was here to assassinate him and if that was true then she was in for some disappointment there or she had escaped and was some sort of crazy and that was something he could understand. Now that he had the possible reasons that she might be here, now he was going to have to deal with this and that meant either using violence or doing something unexpected.

This was the part when he had to work against his own instincts, every part of him wanted to launch himself at her and to tear everything about her apart but that wouldn't resolve anything and he wasn't that man anymore at least not often. Her pheromones were all confused and the more that he thought about it, the more that he began to realize how much he had changed since he had first walked into Charles Xavier's world. That was what it came down to really, as much as he liked to think that he was the raging berzerker that lurked within him that part of him didn't see the daylight much at least not nowadays. It was still there and it could be raised when he needed it but now he was very much a changed man and he couldn't figure when it had happened but he had a fair idea of the how. He had seen life through only his eyes until he came to the school and then over the years that he stayed, his perspective had become broadened because he had learned to see through the eyes of an elf, a furry genius, a future leader and a woman he had come to love very much. Being a part of their lives as well as the other children at the school had taught him a very important lesson, that each and everyone of them had taken a difficult path and that in the end it wasn't about where you had come from, it was who you were that counted.

That meant that here and now he had to make a choice, the same choice that Charles had all those long years ago when he had taken an animal in from the cold and given him a home when no one else would have ever dared. She was charging him but he could see that from a mile away and so as she came at him, Logan leaped over her and sheathed his claws. It was clear that she had been trained which made her dangerous but there was something about her movements that showed that her spirit wasn't in balance. It was something that he had discovered when he was in Japan, that to become a warrior you had to find the stillness within you that to be focused was to be like the pond when a stone is dropped into it revealing no ripple. It had taken him decades to find that focus and now it was so much a part of him that he could recognise it when he saw it in others or more to the point when it wasn't present. Rogers had it, Barnes did to at least to a degree but this girl had no harmony to her but that didn't mean that he underestimated her either as he rolled clear and come back onto his feet "WAIT! You don't want to do this, lets talk. My name is Logan, what's yours?"

Living Person or Living Weapon?
X-23/Laura Kinney
Talk? He wanted to Talk to her? This was by no means what Laura Kinney had expected of this moment. She honestly had no idea how her first meeting with The Wolverine was going to go but a plea to talk… that had never been a thought in her mind… Every instinct in her body… every urge her mind could scream at her was telling her to talk. That was what she had wanted for so long after all, to talk to her genetic template, to understand him better and maybe through that understand herself. There were so many unanswered questions about who she was really, where she belonged in this world, IF she belonged in this world. She was a creation of abused science, a twisted copy of the man standing before her who unlike Laura had lived a long life, had many experiences, and not only survived but thrived long before the Weapon X program had even entered his life. What was her life… no her existence for really that’s all it was, compared to James Howlett or Logan as he went by these days. What did the birth, the training, the abuse and the killing done in the name of a hateful an corrupt organization matter in comparison to the life of this man who was her, who she was and yet wasn’t? Here was her chance after all these years to actually converse with the man that she was built from… and yet all that came from her lips was a feral animal like growl.

Quickly she lunged forward at the Wolverine again, her left arm going back, her right extended out with claws aiming for his center of mass, directly at his heart. This was a move that anyone, even a novice at martial arts could see coming and avoid but at the very last moment she pivoted her hips, dragging her feet into the dirt to change the angle of her lunge so that she came up along his right side with her cocked back left arm swiping for his throat with a lightning quick slash. “You’re Fault!” She screamed as she tried to rip the Wolverine’s throat out with this faint move. She could feel tears welling up in her eyes, blurring her vision with a mix of rage and heart felt anguish wishing to end this… to either kill him or have her own life snubbed out as was right and proper. Questions and philosophy be damned it didn’t matter… “You’re Fault All of IT”

I am the best there is at what I do
Logan was amazed at how quick she was able to move with the Adamantium that she had bound to her body, he had no idea who she was or what she was but there were a few clues to her that he could see. She had claws, adamantium and the ability to use them which meant that she had a healing factor, if he didn't have a clone then she was his kid but she had also been changed by Weapon X. There was only one other person that he knew that could manipulate Adamantium at the molecular level but he was pretty sure that Erik would have no interest in making a female version of himself so that left a project developed by Weapon X to kill him. It made sense given his history and they would have plenty of his genetic information from the various samples that they had taken from him over the years any of which they would be able to use to create a clone. He wasn't a scientist but he had seen and heard enough from the people in his life that were to know some of the theories out there, Weapon X had the resources and the skills to create a clone of him and if she was as messed up as he was then he was in for a hell of a fight. "I don't want to fight you kid but if you force this then I am fine with throwing down don't have any doubts about that."

She was coming straight at him which was an obvious feint and so he waited for her to make her move and there it was, she was going for his right hand side as she screamed that it was all his fault. Stepping to the side, he deflected her blow and dove his own fist towards her outside kidney, striking again and again so that she would be pissing blood for a few minutes before her healing factor kicked in and then he kicked her hard to try and get some distance between the two of them before they started to talk. He didn't want to hurt her but that didn't meant that he wouldn't and so as he moved away Logan tried to capture her attention again "I ain't sure what happened to you but I am willing to guess, bunch of scientists held you, experimented on you, made you do things, experience things that no one else could possibly understand." It was hard for him to realize that potentially he had been once again used to make a weapon but if he was right then this young woman was as much of a victim as he had been but he was still making assumptions though it was based on good evidence at least. Getting space between the two of them was going to be an important goal as he kept his temper and made sure that his claws sheathed, he wasn't going to escalate this situation unless he had to but he didn't want to do that. If he did that then he was no better than the people that had done this to her and that was something that he wasn't going to do unless he had no choice.

Living Person or Living Weapon?
X-23/Laura Kinney
The force of his blows felt like being hit by a jackhammer. She could feel her insides turn, her kindey rupture and maybe even burst all together which would have been fatal for someone without the kind of healing facto she and the Wolverine shared. As it was she wasn’t worried about the pain… she was used to pain… pain as her life and so in a way she was somewhat numb to it. By no means was she unaffected by the blows, Laura felt her heart skip several beats as her body practically seized up for a moment then once he had kicked her and sent her skidding into the dirt she groaned a little. She laid there for a moment breathing, a hissing tone of anger and pain coming through gritted teeth. She looked up at the sky, at the changing colors from blue to purpleish red and the clouds starting to pull in which meant a storm was on its way to hit New York. She could already smell the rain and even faintly hear it out along the water that was not far off. A storm… like the one in her heart and her head… A storm like her life which had always been chaotic and violent. She actually gave off a pained chuckle at the thought before rolling her hips and back up and leaping to her feet in one sleep motion.

“They made me what I am because they could not have you…” Her voice was low, nearly a whisper but loud enough for someone with their shared enhanced hearing to clearly make out as she stood there once more staring at him, her raven black hair having fallen across her face like a mask of shadows. She could feel the healing already taking place in her. The telltale feeling of liquid fire, an annoying burning itch that came with major organs moving, growing and beginning their functions again. She wasn’t the victim of assaults like this too often but she knew well enough what it felt like to be hurt… to heal… to keep moving forward. “You escaped them. You injured them. They wanted you back and they wanted to make you pay. They could not have the first so they chose the latter.” She spoke as she slowly started to stalk around him with the distance between them like an animal waiting and watching for a moment of weakness and the best opening to strike at. She clearly noticed and took into account that he had sheathed his claws from their initial emergence and that he was not making any attempt to use them against her. She on the other hand had her dual claws on both hands out and ready yet she kept the ones in her feet sheathed for the moment, a little surprise she could use if she needed to. “They made me… bred me… to be you… the you they wanted…” She growled and lunged at him again, swiping with lethal efficiency for his throat but this time coming up with her leg to kick him in the ribs on his left, feeling them bust under the impact.

It was at that moment she had a choice…

She could have popped her foot claws and pieced into his lungs and maybe even heart disabling Logan long enough to find away to kill him once and for all. That was in part why she had been made. She was created to be his replacement and in the event of coming face to face with the first Weapon X to capture or eliminate. That is what her creators and former masters in the Program wanted.

She pivoted back, bending her body backwards with the athletic ease of a gymnast and flipped away giving them distance again. She had not gone for the killing blow… she had chosen not to… SHE had chosen… This was a great surprise to her. “Your Fault… and there’s…” She nodded with a deep breath. She was shaky… she was unsure… Her existence had always had some form of course. First she had been a weapon of death, then she had become a niece and protector for her family for a short time, after that she had fallen into the life of a prostitute and finally a vagabond on the streets trying to keep out of any semblance of real life. All of these had been instances of necessity more so than choice… Now she had made REAL choice and as she stared at Logan knowing at least in part she may very well have not succeeded in killing him even had she used her little secret, that he might have been able to stop her even if she pierced his lungs and heart with her foot claw it MIGHT have been possible and yet she chose not to.

I am the best there is at what I do
His instincts had been right, Weapon X was behind this and given what he had in front of him it was clear that they had either cloned him or genetically altered this poor girl to have the same mutant gifts that he did. The healing factor, the claws, all of it pointed to either one of those options and once again he was glad that Hank had bored him to death with all of the science talk because now he actually knew what a clone was outside of the science fiction stories he had read over the years. She was quick he thought as she stepped forward and managed to nail him hard in the ribs which would have cracked under that impact if they weren't laced with Adamantium, handy metal sometimes he found. Stepping back, he had to swallow back that impulse to unsheathe his claws and get down to it but this girl was a victim and being that he was the only one who would know what she had been through there was a bond there even if she wasn't aware of it. There were a couple of things that he could assume though, she would have to be strong willed to survive the Adamantium bonding process and with that healing factor she was a mutant so he was already going to take care of her but there was something in the eyes that captured him, something that he had seen before when he looked into the mirror, that look of the caged animal.

You had to go really low, into that place where the animal lurked because you needed to go that far to survive in a place like Weapon X. They stripped everything from you, turned you into nothing but a gun to be aimed and then to be stored when they didn't need you. Logan knew this all too well which was why he was taking the tact that he was with the young woman trying to attack him. This was a critical stage because she seemed like she had the ability to think, communicate and make choices which meant that she was a lot further on than he had been when Charles had first found him, back then he had been nothing more than an animal. Over the years, Charles had sent him out to recruit difficult individuals because he had that unique ability to deal with them, to see things from their perspective and to also deal with them if they attacked first which often happened after all with his healing factor he could take it.

Staring her down as she stepped back, Logan kept his cool as he spoke to he quietly "They didn't make you girl, they stole everything that you had. I don't know your story but I know those claws and I know that look in the eyes, that feelin of something wanting to claw its way out of your gut and to howl at the moon in rage. Believe me, I know that all too well and so does Weapon X, they want to use you as their puppet just like they did with me but believe me girl, I've been down the road you're heading down and I can help you. A good man told me once that it starts with a choice and he was absolutely right and so you can choose if you can, tell me what your name is if they gave you one." Hell she might not even know it even now he didn't know the name James Howlett even though he had recovered that memory over time, all he knew was Logan so perhaps this was all she knew or they had given her something. Perhaps she had managed to hold onto it after everything that had been done to her, he hoped so because the soul was a difficult thing to break, he knew that from experience and he was counting on the fire in her eyes was as bright back then as it was now. He was willing to bet that she had fought against everything that had been done against her and was struggling against it even now because if she wasn't they would be having one bloody throw down rather than a rather pointed conversation.
