Golden sunlight filtered through the treeline, bringing a warm glow to the rolling waves of grass that surrounded them. Twelve men stood in the centre of the clearing, each armed with a heavy spear. Within the most technologically-advanced nation on earth, the spears were purely ceremonial: As was their purpose there.

Two men stood among them, one clad from head-to-toe in the black vestments of his clan: Their King. The men were members of a fringe tribe in the Wakandan wilderness, and to hunt with the king himself was their honor. That honor, in rare incident, was shared with another--a Canadian who smelled of the wilderness himself. A man who, despite his diminuitive stature, moved and carried himself like a warrior. He was a friend and comrade of the Black Panther himself, which alone earned him the respect of the tribe.

"The beast is close," the king said to his companion. "Three hundred meters upwind and approaching our position. Can you smell it, Logan?"

I am the best there is at what I do
Logan had been surprised when he had gotten the invitation to come hunting with the King of Wakanda, he had done it before in the past with T'Chaka when he had been younger and those had been good times that he had shared with his friend. It did make him wonder why this invitation had come in the first place, his relationship had always been with T'Chaka rather than with his son but from what he knew of the kid he had the makings of a good King especially with the example that his father had set. The flight over had been long but thankfully they had a spare Quinjet that he could borrow with Rogers asking him to build a relationship with T'Challa, they could use all the allies they could get he said. That was rich coming from Rogers, he had been to Wakanda when T'Chaka was had just been a kid so he knew how much these people valued their privacy so looking for any sort of alliance wasn't going to go over well but he did say he would test the waters. Wakanda was one of the few truly beautiful places left on the planet and they worked hard to maintain that, from what he knew their science was far superior to anything they had except for maybe Stark but even then he would back Wakanda over that asshole. The Quinjet was going to be detected so as he flew over the Ocean to Africa he made sure to transmit his location so he wouldn't get shot down, he might have been invited but they were always wary of intruders and he wasn't about to make an idiotic mistake and get shot down.

Coming in over the coast, he came in over Kenya and saw the open grasslands that he had tramped over in years past. During one of those periods where he wondered the world, he had decided to explore Africa to see if some of the legends that he had read about were actually true and to his surprise, he had found that some of them were. One of those legends was about the land of Wakanda and thanks to his skills as an outdoorsman he was able to get into the Kingdom but not undetected and soon enough he ran afoul of the guards there and eventually the King himself. They had been impressed with his resistance and when he unsheathed his claws they had been surprised to find a metal even stronger than their vibranium and that was what had started a conversation between himself and the young king T'Chaka. Their King was a man of wisdom and had a force of personality that Logan had found impressive, the friendship between the two of them had benefited them both over the years with Logan making trips to Wakanda when he needed to and when they needed someone to do some work for them on the outside he would get a message and he would get the job done. They might have been isolationists but they weren't stupid and so he had become a friend of Wakanda which was something that not many outsiders were ever afforded.

Logan landed and was greeted by T'Challa's people who welcomed him to their land, he was transported directly to the Palace and he found that the land had not changed, it was still beautiful but even here the outside world was starting to reach. With everything that had happened T'Challa would have his hands full so he was going to have to find what this young King was like because the position changed people as T'Chaka well knew. They were scheduled for a hunt and so he had brought one of his uniforms which would assist him in blending in, he was given some time to rest before he was presented to the King. T'Challa seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders but that was just a part of his duty and he would learn just as his father had that you needed to learn to set your feet when you were the King. The hunt was going to be interesting and the day was beautiful with the sun touching every part of this wondrous land, Logan spent the early morning taking in the air so he could get used to the scents and aromas that this place carried. Their party was small, twelve men along with him and T'Challa, he was wondering if T'Challa would get to the point of this investigation but for now, he could afford to wait as they made through the rolling plains. Coming to a halt, Logan sniffed the air and caught the scent of their prey along with some other scents that he wasn't familiar with "More like 400 and he's moving away and he ain't alone. Looks like he's got friends T'Challa. How about you send your boys around the flanks and we can head up the middle where the real fun is."

T'Challa gave a soft chuckle at that. Logan's sense of smell was as finely-honed as the Panther's own, but there was very little of the King's land--and its creatures--that T'Challa didn't know. He held his hand out expectantly toward the tribal chief who had accompanied them, who handed the king his ceremonial vibranium-tipped assegai. The weapon was easily two meters in length, its shaft as thick as the king's arm. T'Challa raised it easily in his hands.

"You are a keen hunter, my friend. But the pack of boars moving toward the river are not our prey."

The footsteps were audible now, pounding through the brush. Seconds later, the immense reptilian shape exploded from the treeline. It stood on two legs, low to the ground--a creature with webbed feet, a seeming combination between ape and crocodile. The creature was as unnatural as its origins, the genetic construct of inhuman experiments created by a neighbouring power. The nation of Quasad unleashed these creatures in an attempt to overrun Wakanda's defences only one year earlier. Many were exterminated, but some remained a threat in the outlying wilderness.

Its long, powerful jaws widened to display rows of razor-sharp teeth as it flexed massive, sabre-like claws. The wakandans raised their weapons, and the Panther smiled behind his mask as it roared.

"That is our prey..."

I am the best there is at what I do
Logan had to admit there weren't many places left on the planet that could match up with Wakanda, with the abundance of life mixed with the technological brilliance of her people, this place was certainly more than one could ever hope to understand. The winds carried such scents and for the first time in a long time he had finally felt that he could relax even if it had been only for a moment. Things were always in motion and already elements were moving against them in the US, plans had shifted and because of his actions now there would be consequences of a singular nature which they were all going to pay for. He had considered bringing Jean on this trip but some time away would be good for them, they had spent every moment together and so he had seen this as an opportunity to get away and allow their passions to cool so they could see their situation more clearly. Logan knew in his heart that he loved her and perhaps had never loved someone as much as he did her but he wanted her to be certain of her feelings without him there to cloud the issue, besides it was not often that you were invited on a Royal Hunt and it had been years since he had taken part, already the memories of that hunt filled his mind and for a moment he saw the Father where the son so clearly stood. The pain of his death still stung but at least he had managed to make the funeral and was sure that the carving that he had fashioned lay there still protecting the King or so the stories would have you believe.

Returning his focus to the moment at hand, their quarry burst from cover and roared at them, it's scent filled his nose and it was strange which was rare for him given that he was familiar with damn near every animal on the planet worth hunting. He watched as the men he had brought with them scattered from the obvious danger as the thing had some pretty wicked teeth and the claws looked like they could do some pretty serious damage all of which made Logan smile "You ain't the only one here with claws bub." The reflect was so automatic now that he didn't even think of it but his muscles reacted and his claws unsheathed gleaming in the sun as his adamantium was exposed to the outside air once again. The mythic metal said to be unbreakable and razor sharp was perhaps one of the few things able to damage vibranium but he hadn't put that to the test and he hoped he never would as a growl started deep in his chest, the beast in him reacting to the implicit challenge offered to him "Best get your boys back T'Challa, things are about to get real bloody." With that Logan charged at the beast with a roar that matched the beast's and it saw in him a rival that had to be put down, it's own roar echoed across the plain as he returned the charge, this dumb animal didn't know what it was in for and he hoped T'Challa got in on the action as he came into range and unleashed a savage swipe of his claws and got one back in return.

T'Challa was already in motion. He would not tell the tribesmen to stand back. The dangers of Wakanda's wilds were many, but to revoke the honour of hunting with the king would be an unthinkable offense.

"You are of America," the Black Panther replied even as he vaulted above the creature. "In your country, heroes rescue civilians, and to keep them from harm's way. These men are not 'civilians'--they are warriors. They are hunters. They will neither flee in terror nor fall without a fight."

But such as the honour of the Royal Hunt belonged to the tribesmen, the honour of first blood would belong to the King...or to his white companion. Already, the tribesmen were forming a wide circle around the creature, waiting. Should their king call, or should the monster come too close, their spears would be at the ready. Few seemed anxious of the outcome, however: No Wakandan king had ever fallen in the Royal Hunt.

The beast met Logan's challenge with a massive swipe of its own claws, slicing powerfully from his side. The mutant's own adamantium claws were shorter, but cut much deeper. It howled, as much in surprise as in pain, as the unbreakable metal rended tough, scaly flesh.

T'Challa landed less than a metre to the creature's side, his smile almost visible behind his mask. "Would you like some help, Logan, or do you suspect this may be too bloody for me?"

I am the best there is at what I do
Bright blood flew as the both of them made contact, Logan growled in pain but other than that he kept his mouth shut, pain wasn't something that he was unfamiliar with after all. The beastie also had to reconsider it's options as it wasn't used to getting hurt like it had but now it was facing someone far more dangerous than the usual prey that it hunted. The warriors with T'Challa didn't back down and now they seemed to be getting to plunge in which wasn't surprising and was something that he should have expected given that they had been invited to hunt with their King which also meant that they were some of the best there were around and they wanted a piece of this thing as well. Looking down at his side, he saw that the wound that the thing had given him was already well on the way to healing which was good because he had some more left to give this thing. Spinning around on its heels, the beast backed up and swiped at several of T'Challa's warriors that got too damn close and Logan circled around. One of the first things that you learned as a hunter was that sometimes you had to circle around to get a better position especially if what you were tracking was wounded. Animals tended to get pretty vicious when they were hurt so the last thing that you wanted to do was to get too damn close too quickly, all that would get you was a world of hurt. Looking over at T'Challa when he made a joke it did make him chuckle a bit "I've known too many of your forebears to make that mistake T'Challa, the Black Panther ain't just for show and I know that."

Logan crept around the side while the beast snapped and snarled at the two of them, it was wounded but it was still in the fight and being where they were it did inspire a plan. With a quick nod of his head, Logan pointed at the hind legs and he hoped that T'Challa would get the idea that he was going to hit the hamstrings which would open the thing up to a strike from him straight at the throat. It was a classic play from nature and she could be a real bitch if she wanted to be and she didn't play favorites, his men were doing good in distracting her but the beastie knew where the threats were and it pay attention to him while he moved. "You know whats comin, sucks to be the prey don't it?" Logan surged forward and dived into a roll but he still got caught by one of its claws as he got in close tearing a damn long rip down his back but it was too late as he swiped with both of his claws and severed the long tendons at the back of its legs making movement impossible. The beast roared in pain and that wouldn't last long as T'Challa made his strike but then he caught another scent and he looked into the long grass around them "You are smart bastards aren't ya, used this beastie here to cover your approach." Whatever they were, they were quick, small and smart which was a damn bad combination but he caught sight of one of the bastards and so he called out to T'Challa "Looks like we got more company T'Challa."

Logan was as efficient as ever, T'Challa thought as the man vaulted over the creature. His unbreakable adamantium claws sliced cleanly through what might have been the creature's hamstrings, eliciting a roar that was more pain than rage. T'Challa spun sharply toward the creature's front, and delivered a sudden, powerful upward thrust of his assegai. The tip of the short spear pierced the animal's jaws, and emerged sharply through the back of the creature's skull.

T'Challa glanced up as the creature fell, its weight heavy and motionless on the jungle floor. Already, he sensed another fight approaching. He glanced from the corner of his eye, and spotted motion in the nearby brush.

"Clever girl..."

One of the benefits of being a hunter was that you knew when you were surrounded and that was the feeling that Logan was getting, he had only run into these things in the Savage Lands but Wakanda was a place of mystery so he wasn't surprised that there were some of these raptors here too. Now that he knew that they were surrounding it was only a matter of time before these things came after them and while he knew that these little bastards weren't tough enough to take either him or T'Challa down it still paid for them to be more mobile then static but that still meant breaking the circle. Logan sniffed the air and he was already getting a sense of the situation, they were getting ready to charge in and once that happened they were in for the fight of their lives and with these little bastards they weren't only quick, they were smart which was a bad combination to be fighting when you were talking about a predator. Feeling his wound finally starting to close, he glanced over at T'Challa and nodded his head to the west where there was a small hill which would give them a most defensible position. T'Challa was the King here sure which meant that he was bound to have security people observing and if the threat to the King became too much then they would simply step in but that didn't matter right now as Logan's finely tuned senses started to take over. His eyes started to dilate and his hearing became even sharper to the point where he could hear the beasties breathing.

Not willing to wait for them to charge in, Logan let out a roar and then charged off towards the hill and one of the raptors who was in his way charged him back with a jaw full of razor-sharp teeth. It would find however, that in this instance it was not the apex predator in this equation and that as much as it was a hunter there were things in this world that were far worse and near the top of that list was the mutant known as Wolverine. As the raptor leaped towards him, Logan rolled to the side and with a swipe of his claws, he took the head of the creature with a single blow, his adamantium more than able to tear through the tough scales that made up the raptors skin. Bright blood flew through the air and several other raptors engaged them but Logan along with T'Challa's men were able to hold them off to break through the encircling hordes and make a break for it. Now the battle was more in their favor as they battled against the hunting Raptors who were trying to pick them off one at the time. This was how these beasties went about their daily business he found as they tried to trip him or just plain charge him but they were quickly learning that the short manthing with the sharp claws was not something that was going to go down easily. Looking over at T'Challa, Logan flashed him a quick grin "You people here never fail to disappoint T'Challa, damn you guys have a lot of fun."

There was an American film about just this sort of thing: Two people, who were being stalked and attacked by a pack of prehistoric velociraptors. In the film, the victims were children who had to rely on their wits alone to survive. That was a stark contrast to the situation that now unfolded. T'Challa and Logan were adults, each deadly even when unarmed. The men each fought with weapons of their choosing...and if one group was to flee, it would not be the warriors.

Almost as soon as T'Challa spoke, one of the creatures burst from the underbrush, exploding through the air in a ball of savage force. Its legs were extended toward the king, sickle-like talons raised to rend flesh and bone. The creatures were unspeakably agile, overwhelmingly quick and powerful, with predatory cunning, but they were still animals.

The Black Panther delivered a powerful thrust, and quickly disemboweled the creature before it could close the distance. With his free hand, he directed his tribesmen toward the hilltop. Other members of the pack were likely closing in from behind them, and the tribesmen would have a fight of their own. The Panther focused on the present, however, as another of the creatures approached.

"Not even the King of Wakanda is above the laws of nature," T'Challa smiled back from behind his mask as he delivered another thrust toward one of the creatures. "We are a part of nature, not superior to it...that is the lesson the Royal Hunt teaches us. But even so, to be responsible stewards of this land, some of its creatures must be culled."

Even as the king spoke, another of the creatures attacked from his side, delivering what might have been a fatal slash to his side...if not for the vibranium sheath that protected him. T'Challa delivered a backhanded slash of his assegai, more annoyed than harmed by the attack...

I am the best there is at what I do
It was good to see that T'Challa was no slouch in a fight, as much as he respected his father T'Chaka he hadn't been a warrior which wasn't a bad thing. One of the things that he had learned over the years was that people did what they could with the gifts they were given but that didn't make them any less because their gifts lay in areas different from their own. It did give him an opportunity to examine T'Challa's fighting style not that he was expecting to throw down with the King of Wakanda but he hadn't expected Scott or Stark to sell them all out either well Stark he saw coming but he expected better of Scott. That was something that he hadn't shared with anyone, not even Jeanie that Scott's betrayal of them and everything that they stood for had hurt him deeply. The dream that they had was supposed to be above politics and the one thing that they were all supposed to place as a priority except for the safety of the students which wasn't that far from the other. The Raptors were closing in on their position but now they were being far more careful, they had been bloodied and now they were committed but unlike most of the animals that were in nature, these ones had a level of intelligence that was damn scary.

T'Challa's men had been separated from them which was a good and bad position because now they had less to worry about but not as many hands to fight back with but when you had the Black Panther and the Wolverine numbers didn't matter that much. They were coming at them now in numbers but that didn't bother him too much, now that he had less to worry about Logan was free to fight because he wanted to and did he need this more than he had expected. Logan let out a feral growl as he leaped into the fray with adamantium flashing this way and that, slaughtering his way through the raptors like the Grim Reaper himself. There weren't that many opportunities where he could unleash like he was but T'Challa had mentioned that this was a cull and he might as well ensure that he put as many of them down as possible. Hot blood coated his skin but none of that mattered as he lost himself in the pure joy of the hunt, of being the Apex Predator with little or no equal. Like nearly every pack like animal, there was an alpha and they were almost always stronger and quicker than the rest and these Raptors were no different, as Logan clashed with it's pack the Alpha roared as it crashed out of cover, it's claws slicing through Logan sent pieces of him flying in all directions. Catching him slightly off balance, all Logan could do was catch him with the edge of his claws as it rushed past to take a swipe at T'Challa.

The Alpha of the pack veered toward T'Challa, almost visibly indistinguishable from its brethren--But through the scent of blood and fear and anger that wafted from the pack of vicious creatures, the king could smell it. The Alpha was lord to its tribe, which was already beginning to thin, but even this creature would fall before the King.

The Black Panther was a blur of motion, spinning away from snapping jaws, ducking low to avoid the swipe of the creature's talons as he raised his weapon. A lightning-quick thrust of his vibranium-tipped spear easily pierced the creature's heart, and T'Challa let it fall limp to the ground below.

The battle didn't last for much longer. The regions raptors attacked best through the element of surprise, which had been lost to them early on. They had tried to kill with brute force and sheer numbers instead, and had failed. Now their numbers were thinned considerably, as had their chance of overpowering the two of them.

The tribesmen worked closely to thin out the rest of the pack, turning the creatures' first strategy against them as the raptors attempted to flee. It lasted only minutes before the last of the creatures lay dead on the jungle floor, the ground glistening red beneath their feet.

T'Challa moved to Logan's side, examining the bloody, ragged gashes left in the alpha's wake.

"You are hurt," he said. "From what I know of you, I should know better than to worry. But Wakanda has some of the finest doctors in the world, if you would like to remain comfortable while you heal..."

I am the best there is at what I do
Logan watched on as T'Challa took down the Alpha creature that was leading this herd with a skill that was pretty impressive but not surprising considering the country that he was the leader of. He had seen over the years how they trained their warriors and to say that they were impressive would be an understatement but the Black Panther was the apex of that culture in nearly every damn way. Logan had seen his Grandfather in action during the war and been most impressed with how T'Chaka had embraced other aspects of being a King proving that the Wakandians had a lot to offer the world if they ever decided to join it. That was the problem with Wakanda in his opinion though he would never voice that because he had far too much respect for the family that ruled this place and that continued to this day. T'Chaka had a chance to end his life or at least give it a damn good try but instead, he had decided to take in this lost soul as he called Logan and try to show him a different way to live his life. The lessons that he had taken away from Wakanda had shaped his life ever since and he found a sense of peace that he hadn't known since he had lived in Japan so Wakanda had a special place in his heart and so he had a love for this place like few others.

Pulling out a cigar from his belt pouch, he glanced down at the wound that T'Challa was motioning at and he shrugged as he lit his stoogie up and took a long puff on it "Don't worry about it T'Challa. Been through worse and my healin factor will have me right as rain soon enough. You want one?" He held out a cigar that he had brought just in case T'Challa wanted one not that he thought that he would but still, it would be rude not to offer. "I sure could use a cold beer after that but I tell ya that was just what I needed after everything that is going on back in the States." T'Challa had every reason to support the SRA after his father was killed in an explosion where that very issue was being discussed. There were rumors of who the people behind that terrorist act were but there was nothing complete and by the time he got there to assist with the investigation there hadn't been much left. T'Challa still had a ways to go before he was the King that his Father was but that was the fate of every man, to live in the shadow of their Fathers until they found their own place in the world. Breathing out, Logan enjoyed the taste of the cigar as he looked around at this beautiful land "Been a long while since I was last here, but I am still surprised at the beauty here. I can see why you and your family fight so hard to protect this place."

T'Challa glanced at the cigar in Wolverine's mouth: A western tradition to celebrate victory. Wolverine, of course, had a healing factor to overcome the sort of poisons that cigar contained. The King did not partake.

"Many of my people feel the land of Wakanda is sacred," he told Logan as they started toward the nearby group of tribesmen, who were themselves celebrating their triumphant hunt. "To many more, it is simply home, and that is enough. There will be a feast after this hunt, and you are welcome to attend. We may not have beer, but I have no doubt libations will be available. Then we can discuss what is happening in America..."

Logan savored his cigar as the wind blew in from the west carrying with it scents that he had not experienced in a long time, there was something special about Africa, he had known that from the moment he had first arrived here. It was said that life started here and he knew enough people that believed that the legendary Cradle of Life was located somewhere here in Africa but he had never bothered to investigate it. Archaeology had never been a passion of his but given his lifespan perhaps it would be one day all he had to be was patient. Now that he was standing here, memories of another life flooded back to him when he had been a far angrier man and a good King who saw something in him that he hadn't known himself showed him that he wasn't just an animal. T'Chaka's death still rankled and if he found out who was responsible he wasn't sure that he would bring him back here to face trial, he would just skin the bastard and leave him out in the wild for the animals to pick over. Puffing on his cigar, Logan was lost in thought for a moment "I never told you about the time your old man and I first met did I T'Challa?" Logan wasn't sure how much T'Chaka had told his son about that moment, even now he wasn't sure how he would have fared if T'Chaka hadn't shown some understanding but he was sure that they wouldn't be having the polite conversation that they were having now.

Logan fell in beside T'Challa as they made their way back to the Palace, smoke still puffing from around him as he decided to share his tale, it was a good one at least "I remember when I first met your old man, I had made my way through Africa when I was still strugglin with what Weapon X had done to me. I had escaped and decided I needed to get out into the world and disappear, this was before the Professor and the rest of them and let's just say I wasn't in a good place. I was wondering around and made my way into Wakanda though I didn't know that at the time and before I knew what was going on I had some fairly serious looking warriors pointing their spears at me. Now, I warned them that they didn't want this fight and things were getting serious so I popped these and that was when your Father arrived. Can't say I was too impressed when I first met him but he just looked at me then asked "Who do you fight warrior? Yourself or the ghosts of your past? I had never had anyone ask me a question like that before, once I pop the claws usually it gets bloody and damn quick but he told his people to hold. For the first time in a long time I took a different option and soon enough he and I were friends and have been for a long time kid. Wouldn't mind paying my respects while I am here if that is allowed, thought I should ask about that."

The king vaguely knew the tale of when his father met the strange, feral westerner. T'Chaka did not greet threats to Wakanda lightly, and the Black Panther had little doubt that such a battle between Logan and his father would have been vicious. But it was not strength or prowess that made a good king, T'Challa had learned. His father had been wise as well--ending a potentially deadly conflict before it even began, with only a few words.

"My father's grave lies just beyond the palace," T'Challa nodded. "We will visit it at your leisure. His soul resides with the Panther God now, but he is watching. It will be a joy to him to see an old friend..."
